In early February 2026, the Park Falls Police Department was notified by a shop owner that a man had accidently taken the wrong vehicle and had made some changes to it.

An officer began investigating and learned that two vehicles, which had the same color paint, were close to the same year, and were the same make and model, were at a shop in Park Falls. When one of the vehicles were done, someone other than the person who had dropped it off, picked it up. They got the keys and took the vehicle to the owner's house. At that time, a wheel bearing was installed. Shortly after, when the two men could not find certain items in the car, they realized they had the wrong car. They notified the shop and brought it back. The man who picked up the car said he was given the key for it and did not know it was someone else's until the wheel bearing was already put in, and the man he picked it up for said it was not his vehicle.

The shop owner said he could not remove the part. However, he offered to pay the cost of the part to the man who installed the part, and he offered to make sure it was installed correctly in the car where it got installed.

Both men got their correct vehicles returned to them.
On Monday, November 24, 2025, Vicki Hirtreiter, a 61-year-old woman, was found deceased and partially burned in her front yard of the 1200 block of Saunders Avenue.

According to Park Falls Police Chief Marvin Nevelier, "Based on circumstances observed at the scene, the Park Falls Police Department requested assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to assist with the investigation. A search warrant was later obtained for the residence as part of the investigation. The investigation continued for several weeks as items of evidence were examined and potential witnesses were interviewed. An autopsy was later conducted on the victim at the Marathon County Medical Examiner's Office in Wausau.

"At the conclusion of a thorough investigation, the cause of death was due to severe burn injuries that were determined to be accidental.

"The Park Falls Police Department would like to thank the DCI, the Marathon County Medical Examiner's Office, and the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory for their assistance."

My Price County has asked the police chief for additional information, and if we receive the answers to those questions, they will be added to this article, and the article will be marked as "updated."
My Price County asked the police chief the following questions on January 23, 2026:

"One big question we would like to report the answer to is how did she receive these accidental burns that killed her? Was there a fire in her home that either she put out or the fire department put out? Or was she outside her home burning something? Was there a fire somewhere when help arrived? Can you give us more details?

"Who called in to report she was lying in her front yard? For how long was she lying in her front yard?

"Did she die from the burns to her body, or was there also smoke inhalation, or exposure to the outdoor elements?"
On January 30, 2026, Park Falls Chief of Police Marvin Nevelier responded, "Our department is still following up on some additional information so no other information will be released." When we asked if anything additional would be released at a later time, the chief stated, "I will not be releasing any further information regarding this incident."

A day in the life of a police officer can vary, especially in a small town. Some days are easier, and some days involve more difficult arrests. That "more difficult" day happened for officers in Price County on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

According to a bystander, who was visiting the area and captured video of the arrest, a man was in his truck in Park Falls for an extended period of time. He exited with a heavy police presence giving him commands. He was shouting that he did not know what he did wrong or why he was being arrested. At some point, it appears he was either wearing shorts or took his pants off. The video was intentionally blurred in one spot at the beginning, and the end of the video is "censored" in spots to avoid showing personal areas of the man being arrested. You can view the video on our Facebook page.
According to Park Falls Police Chief Marvin Nevelier, police arrived at 7th Avenue South in the early morning hours on Sunday. He said, "The Price County Dispatch Center advised that a female subject was reporting that she had been held against her will a short distance from her current location. Officers responded and began to investigate the incident and obtained the following information: that she had been riding in a vehicle with Michael Stevens since approximately 12 a.m. on January 4, 2026; that Michael drove her back to her residence but then drove away before she could exit the vehicle; that Michael drove to a vacant lot near 8th Street South and 2nd Street South and parked his vehicle; that Michael turned off his vehicle and became enraged and began destroying the interior of the vehicle; that Michael was causing wires to spark and commented about setting the vehicle on fire; that Michael had mentioned being in possession of a firearm, but no firearm was observed; that at approximately 5:32 a.m., the victim was able to flee from the vehicle and ran to a nearby residence for help."
With that information, additional officers were summoned to the scene. The Price County Sheriff's Office and Price County SRT responded in case the man might have a firearm. After Michael was located, he stayed in his truck for approximately two hours. He then exited his vehicle, and officers began giving Michael verbal commands. Michael was taken into custody. He was taken to the hospital for treatment as he had been exposed to the outdoor elements; he did not have heat in his vehicle for hours.

After release from the hospital, Michael was transported to the Price County Jail. He is a 35-year-old man being held for violating his probation. According to Chief Nevelier, the Park Falls Police Department is referring misdemeanor and felony criminal charges against Michael for his actions. His listed charges are DC Domestic, False Imprisonment, Resist/Obstruct Officer, Terrorist Threats, and HAB Criminal. He has a probation hold and a felony hold.

Park Falls' mayor, Tara Tervort, reflected on the accomplishments of the recent past and is looking forward to next year.

She stated, "Park Falls has experienced significant change over the last few years, with many major projects reaching
completion in 2025. This past spring, Old Abe Memorial Park was completed, finalizing a redevelopment effort that began in early 2020. What was once a city block filled with vacant buildings and contaminated soil from an old gas station has now been
completely transformed. The city removed the structures, remediated the contamination, and sold a portion of the block to Forward Bank, which has since built a beautiful new commercial building on the corner. We also constructed a new parkway and developed a vibrant downtown central park featuring an outdoor performance stage, a concession building with public restrooms, and a renovated open-air pavilion. Working with our local veterans, the Old Abe Memorial eagle statue was also relocated to its new home in the park."

The mayor also mentioned the completion of the YMCA and medical center renovations, resurfacing of Highway 13, and the conversion of highway streetlights into LED fixtures.

In 2026, Tara stated the city will put together a comprehensive plan; the most recent plan dates back to 2010. She said, "This update is long overdue and will play an essential role in guiding future development. A current comprehensive plan not only strengthens our eligibility for federal and state grants but also provides important direction for developers seeking to invest in our community. As part of this effort, we will also develop a strategic plan for the former paper mill property. Both plans will require strong public input. We want to hear your thoughts, your hopes, and your vision for Park Falls. There will be multiple opportunities for you to participate in public meetings dedicated to this process. Whether your interests involve housing, lodging, retail, industry, recreation, or any other aspect of growth, your voice matters."
An incorrect lane marking caused traffic confusion in Park Falls on Saturday, September 6, 2025.

At the intersection of Hwy. 13 and County Road E, heading southbound, there at two lanes of traffic. The right lane was marked correctly for a straight or right turn. The left lane was marked incorrectly with an arrow directing traffic to the right rather than to the left. This arrow was painted on the road as the repaving project is nearing completion.

According to the Park Falls Police Department, police were aware of the issue this afternoon and the issue was being addressed.

Later in the day, the arrow was somewhat blacked out so not to cause further confusion for drivers.
Hadley Bay competed in the Girls 11-12 Division and was busy with four events to compete in; she delivered in all. Hadley's day was highlighted by taking first place in the 800 run and second place finishes in both the 3000 and 1500 runs. Capping off the day, she finished fifth place in the long jump.

Harper Patterson competed in the Girls 9-10 Division and was up to the task. Patterson started her day off in the high jump by taking first place. She then turned her sights to the track, where she took second place in the 800 run and third place in the 1500 run.

FIFIELD GARDEN: BLOOMING WITH PLANNING AND PASSION

Inspired by various places she has lived and traveled, Amanda Schluenz has been envisioning a community garden in Fifield for some time.

"This is something that I thought about while trying to figure out how best to get to know this little community that I've joined. I gathered my seeds, watered them with wishes, drew up a proposal, and went to my very first ever town board meeting!" Amanda said.

Originally from Highbridge, just north of Mellen, she moved to Glidden, experienced college in Superior, and then moved on to Stevens Point, New York, Green Bay, and Georgia. The adventures kept piling on. "I've always been more of a rolling stone than a rock covered in moss, so I hadn't really set any "real roots," per say, until I found myself here in Fifield, of all places!" Amanda added.

While she was out east, she would travel through several small towns where she found local growers, farmers, and vendors. She got to know a core group of them, and one grower, Eugene, became her friend. He owns and operates a farm out of Liberty, New York. "I watched him build that from a kid on a tractor, for the first time, to this incredible man, self-educated farmer, set up shop, and succeeding! Watching him do that and then bring what he had to market each week really hit me. Watching the growers and the farmers and the artisans, all cheering one another on, and supporting each other; that's the community feel that I would love to bring to Fifield! Everyone growing and learning from one another and building those relationships that last, relationships like we had when we were young, and you could run though the corn fields to go ask for a cup of sugar. When you see your neighbor struggling, are you going to help or not?" Amanda shared.

While she claims she is not a master gardener, landscaper, or horticultural expert, she said she loves being in the dirt, fostering growth, and watching anything and everything grow and bloom.
Submitted image.

With her plan in mind, she discovered a 50 x 150 plot of land on Linden Avenue in Fifield, owned by the town, which was even larger than she hoped to find. She felt it would be the perfect spot for a quiet, beautiful educational space. Her initial plans are to build a small vegetable garden by the alley, and, as the hill slopes down, she will use that space as a quiet, garden park.

She said, "My vision is that it can be a teaching space for children; the schools could get involved, building boxes or benches or biology class or a basic gardening class." She also added, "We have an aging population here. This garden could provide some outdoor socialization, food for the needy, a safe space for kids to enjoy; a place to bridge the gap between the elders and the kids. A place to foster more volunteering and to get connected as a community again. I'm sure this isn't exactly what the assignment was, but this is my Fifield Community Garden fantasy."

Amanda's fantasy is finally coming true. She was excited to receive board approval from the Town of Fifield. "I also got my hands on three 300-gallon water barrels for the garden. After the meeting, speaking with the fire department and the town guys, we are going to work together to make this happen!" Amanda shared with excitement.

She added, "I am so very passionate about getting a real sense of community back. To me, that means we should be caring and growing for and with one another. We have an aging population with no one in sight to pick up the balls when it's time for the elders to pass along all their incredible knowledge. We need one another now more than ever. The young ones aren't taught the 'old ways' and will never get to know that feeling, and that hurts my heart."

Amanda is hoping the community garden will be one way to keep the 'old ways' alive. "I have ideas, and I'm so excited to share with anyone who will listen." If you are interested in helping Amanda bring her dream to fruition, via monetary donations or donations of time, you can contact her on Facebook. Soon, an account will be set up for donations at the Town of Fifield.

While Amanda has no huge expectations for a bountiful harvest this year, given the growing season is well underway, she stated she plans to get a feel for the land, possibly plant some bulbs for next year, and get some flowers in for this year. She is eager to see what can be done and where this journey will go.
