On Monday, February 2, 2026, at 3:45 p.m., Phillips Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire on Deer Lake Lane in the Township of Worcester in Phillips. Dispatch reported that the house was nearly fully engulfed, and the occupants were evacuating. According to a family member of the home owners, all people and pets exited safely.

According to Fire Chief Dave Lontcoski, "Phillips Fire responded with an engine, tender, pumper/tanker, heavy rescue, two chiefs, and twelve firefighters.

"Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire coming from the roof of the three-story home. Firefighters made an interior attack but had to pull out and go defensive when parts of the roof started to collapse."

Command requested a MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) to the first alarm. Area fire departments responded. Park Falls Fire responded with a squad and five firefighters; Fifield Fire responded with an engine, tender, and command vehicle, a chief, and six firefighters; Prentice Fire responded with a tender, squad, chief, and firefighters; and Catawba Fire responded with an engine, tender, chief, and eight firefighters.

"Due to the size of the home and the lack of accessibility to the roof area, the alarm was upgraded requesting a ladder truck from Park Falls. Park Falls Fire responded with the ladder and four additional firefighters.

"Firefighters worked for several hours to bring the fire under control. Five tenders were used to haul water to the scene from hydrants in the city. Approximately 60,000 gallons of water was used to completely extinguish the fire.

"The fire is still under investigation, but it appears to have started around the chimney area and spread rapidly to the roof," the chief reported.

Phillips EMS, Phillips Police Department, Price County Sheriff's Office, Emergency Management, Price Electric, Phillips Water Department, and the Town of Worcester also assisted at the scene.

Phillips Fire & Rescue would like to thank all that assisted at the fire. "It's great how everyone can work together as a team," Dave said.

According to a family member of the fire victims, donations can be made to the “Ketterhagen VanGhem Donation Account” at any Forward Bank location. My Price County asked if any items are needed, and the family member felt that clothing may be needed. If we get information regarding the sizes or any other needs and where to drop off items, we will update this article. At the time of publication, this is all the information we have been provided.

"Will I have time to catch frogs after school?" "Will my parents let me get a puppy?" "Can I go fishing with Dad this weekend?" "Will Mom let me have my favorite cookie?" Those are the types of things that are generally the greatest concerns of seven-year-old boys. The parents of seven-year-old boys generally are concerned with making sure he washes his hands after catching those frogs, keeping the mud off the carpet after the boy and his dog are done playing outside, making sure there are enough snacks and warm clothes for the fishing trip, and making sure their son doesn't eat too many cookies. Sometimes, however, those concerns become very small when a greater concern becomes the focus.

For Brad and Stacy Meskill, the greater focus for their eldest son, Owen, is helping him recover from a brain mass that was discovered because Owen was having some concerning symptoms. After an MRI, Owen was diagnosed on Friday, January 16, 2026. Having the answer to what was causing Owen's symptoms, Brad and Stacy drove him to the American Family Children's Hospital in Madison during a snowstorm. Five days later, Owen had a lengthy surgery. Every parent can only imagine what it feels like waiting for your child to come out of brain surgery, each minute dragging on with wonder and worry.

Fortunately, Owen got through the surgery. He is recovering at a children's hospital and will likely be there for a number of weeks. The next portion of his treatment will depend on several factors, which will become clear as healing progresses. It is likely that Owen will miss the next couple months of school. Owen has a younger sibling, Rolan, who is looking forward to his big brother getting better, so, of course, this is a difficult time for him, too.

The Meskills have had many people reach out to them during this time, and they shared, "We are blessed with an incredible community, and we are so grateful." When asked what more the community can do, Owen's aunt, Valerie "Val" Anderson, said, "Both Brad and Stacy will need significant time off from their jobs. As we all know, this will be a great loss of income while accumulating notable expenses. Many have asked about where to send monetary gifts to ease their financial stress so they can continue to focus on their child’s health and recovery; because of this generous inquiry, there will be an account set up at Prevail Bank under the 'Owen Meskill Sunshine Fund.'" Those wishing to donate via Venmo can send directly to @Stacy-Franz-1.

When asked what the community could do to lift Owen's spirits, Val said he loves books and animals. My Price County asked if he might appreciate greeting cards, and Val figured that would be appreciated as he loves to read. She added, "He loves and appreciates every gift he receives, but his parents are hopeful to get a therapy/service dog for Owen to cuddle. They recently learned that he may be able to get a dog through a foundation. If not, they’ll use some monetary gifts toward Owen’s new pup." The dog is a plan for the near future, but If you would like to send words of encouragement to lift Owen's spirits now, you can send cards to Owen Meskill, 124 County Road F, Phillips, WI 54555.

A fundraiser, "Owen's Night," will also take place on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at the Phillips High School. Join the community for a boys' basketball game (Phillips vs. Abbotsford) and youth basketball night. For Owen, there will be a 50/50 raffle, bean bag toss, gift baskets, t-shirts, and more. All funds raised will go to the Meskill family.

While many of you know Brad and Stacy from their years working at Harbor View when it was owned by Duane and Bonny Grube, Val shared that Owen is private by nature. For that reason, the family wished to only release these details at this time, and they appreciate the community understanding their desire to keep much of the situation private.
The Morrison Family. Submitted photo.

Naomi (Lukes) Morrison, the K-12 art teacher at the Prentice School District, was waiting at the school for her husband, Bob, and their two sons, James and Luke, to arrive for a meet-and-greet with their new teachers.

James, who would be entering third grade, and Luke, who would be entering first grade, were only about ten miles away from their mom and the school at 9:43 a.m., traveling south on Hwy. 13. In that moment, what should have been a happy day turned into tragedy and Naomi and Luke's worst nightmare.

At the intersection of Little Chicago Road / Hwy. 111 and Hwy. 13, tragedy struck for this family. A farm's semi and the pick-up truck that the Morrison family was in, collided.

Sadly, Bob and James passed on at the scene. Luke was airlifted to the hospital. According to Harmoni Jesunas, a music teacher at the Prentice School District and friend of the family, "Luke is going to be okay. He has no major health concerns or major injuries." He was discharged from the hospital and is home.

Harmoni described Naomi as someone who "puts her whole heart into everything she does. You can see the joy that radiates from her when she talks about the love of her life, her husband, Bob, and their two elementary-aged sons, James and Luke."

Harmoni gave information about the Morrison family, sharing, "Naomi and Bob spent this last summer creating the beginning of a fully sustainable dream garden together, expanding their farm livestock, and spending as much time together as they could before the school year started. Bob’s favorite pastime was fishing, a hobby that he and his wife were both passionate about. They enjoyed competing together in ice fishing tournaments, and Bob could be found fishing year-round any chance he got. Their close-knit bond and love was apparent in every smile and laugh that was almost always on their faces.

On County Road D in Phillips on June 3, 2025, every parent's nightmare came true for Mike and Terri Franson when they learned their almost 17-year-old daughter, Stephanie, had been injured in a car accident.

According to Terri, "We do not know exactly what happened. All we or the police can do is guess. After school, she did a few things around town. Being an early dismissal day, Mike and I were driving our bus routes." Mike and Terri got home. Their daughter told them she had to pick one thing up at the store, drop off a co-worker, and then she would be home. Everything went according to plan until she turned onto County Road D. "She remembers turning onto D, but that's it," Terri shared. "We figure it was raining, and she knew she had a phone appointment at 3 p.m. with DVR to get things going for school after she graduated. We think she was just trying to get on the road and forgot to put her seatbelt on, hit a puddle of water just before the first bridge, and hydroplaned. The officer was thinking the same." They believe the truck rolled four or five times, and Stephanie got thrown from the truck.
After such a horrific crash, the extent of her injuries was unknown, but, thankfully, she was alive. Doctors at the hospital in Park Falls determined she had a broken bone in her neck, lacerated liver, and bruised lungs. She also had a gash above her eye, along with other scrapes and bruises.

Stephanie was sent to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield to be seen by the trauma team. Doctors there found many injuries, including a skull fracture, fracture in her neck and the 4th vertebrae, fracture in her lower spine, bleeding from her lower spleen, possible slight bleeding from the top of her spleen, and a fracture in her pelvic area. They took more tests to determine the best road to recovery.
On June 4, 2025, it was determined Stephanie would need surgery to repair her pelvis. According to her mother, Terri, a screw was put in place to hold everything together.

The next day, Stephanie was able to sit on the side of the bed and stand twice. Her mom shared, "One time standing was quick due to the pain, but the second time she worked through her pain and stood for five seconds. She needs to learn how to stand and walk with little to no pressure on her right leg until the pelvis heals a bit from the surgery." Later that day, her neck brace was removed. Progress was being made.
Stephanie was able to walk across her ICU room on June 6, and she was able to leave ICU that evening. She was transferred to a regular hospital room. Once she comes home, the physical therapists suggested Stephanie have a ramp to be able to get into the family's home. The house currently does not have a ramp.

Terri stated that Stephanie will also need a vehicle she can easily get in and out of, especially to travel to follow-up doctor's appointments, and Terri's 2011 Chevy Traverse will be the best option for her to get into. Unfortunately, it needs some repairs, including a timing chain, valve cover gaskets, front brakes, front struts, rear shocks, and a front stabilizer bar. Mike can do the repair work once they have the parts, Terri shared.

If anyone is willing to donate boards or money for a ramp or parts or money for the repair of a car, it would be much appreciated by the Franson Family. You can reach out to Terri on Facebook to send money via Facebook or Cash App, donate on GoFundMe, or you can send it to their address at W2998 County Road D, Phillips, WI 54555.

About a year ago, Charlie was a very lucky boy, and he got adopted from Catkins Animal Rescue. He was adopted into a loving home. Unfortunately, Charlie's owner recently passed on, and now Charlie is back at Catkins looking for a new home.

He is a 2.5-year old beautiful mixed breed weighing 69 pounds. Catkins believes he is part black mouth cur.

He is housebroken, and he knows basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. He loves to hang out and lay on the couch with his head in your lap. He is a cuddler at night and really enjoys attention from his humans.

He has not been with small children or cats. He does well in playgroups with other dogs but would do best as an only dog in the home.

He is fully vetted and ready for a new home.

To view Charlie's profile and apply to adopt him, click this link.

February is American Heart Month, designated to encourage people to focus on their cardiovascular health. That focus came one month earlier, in January, for Kim Kaletka when she noticed she was experiencing shortness of breath and wheezing. "Just walking into school or work, I was out of breath," Kim shared.

After debating if these symptoms were something she needed to take seriously, she called the clinic, and they directed her to go straight to the emergency room. Doctors considered she might have a blood clot or be having a heart attack, but tests revealed those options weren't the case. Instead, Kim had fluid on her lungs. She was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She spent three days in the hospital with moderate to severe readings for heart failure.

She was discharged from the hospital but had to wait three weeks to see a cardiologist. Given she would break out into cold sweats and have trouble breathing with too much activity, Kim could not continue her work at the nursing home. She also could not do much around the house except think. She had time to think about the worst possible scenarios and to think of the bills that were mounting.

Her insurance company made her wait for eight weeks, leading her to believe she would get awarded her short-term disability claim, but in the end they denied her request. Their reason for denial was because she had shortness of breath in October when she was diagnosed with pneumonia. Therefore, her insurance company decided she may have had a pre-existing condition. However, Kim said, "It's more than clear in my records I never had congestive heart failure before this." She is going to appeal their decision.

In the meantime, Kim has to wait. She has to wait to go back to work and wait to see if her heart is healing when she receives her next scan.

Kim has had to play the medical waiting game in the past. Six years ago her son, Thomas, won the battle against cancer. "With God's help I made it through watching my son battle cancer. Somehow, someway, I'll make it through this. Most days I just don't see how, but I will."

Kim shared, "It's a scary situation that you never expect is going to happen and then, boom, it does." She said that, as a single mom to Thomas and Lexi, she had a lot of expenses as single moms do, and with the cost of living increasing, it was difficult for her to get ahead to have a "rainy day" fund, so she has to work to accomplish that now. This week, she is most concerned about having enough money to make her car payment so she will have a vehicle to go to medical appointments and eventually back to work. "You just don't think of all the things you rely on when life runs smoothly. And I cannot get a loan because my credit is not great these last months because I haven't been able to pay my bills."

Given My Price County shares information about those in need during difficult times, we reached out to Kim asking if we could help by getting her situation more attention. She agreed but said, "I'm not just looking for people to give me money." Therefore, if anyone is wanting to help Kim with living and medical expenses to get her through this difficult time, she has listed some items for sale at this link. She will be adding more items in the near future. Otherwise, cash donations can be given on Venmo at @Kim-Kaletka or at her GoFundMe page.

Kim will have more scans and possibly need medical treatments. She currently is taking a number of medications. Kim is going through a lot, but she said, "It will make me a stronger person."

In the evening of Tuesday, October 31, 2023, the Staroba family's house on Argyle Avenue caught fire causing a total loss of the home and its contents. The three children who lived there watched their home burn while still in their Halloween costumes.

Immediately, members of the community offered to help. Many people sent clothing to the school with their children, and a family that was moving donated furniture. According to Nikki Kalander, who is helping organize donations, "Things that could still be donated are consumables such as cleaning supplies, personal hygiene supplies, and even non-perishable food items. Those items could go directly to the family if they [the donors] know them, or I can pick things up from local Phillips and Prentice people."

According to Mary Staroba Pliska, grandmother to the three children, two of the girls have enough clothing thanks to generous donations but one child could use some additional items. She wears 16 to 18 plus sizes. The children's father, Jason, and their grandfather, Wayne, could use shirts in size medium and large plus pants that are 34x30 and 31x30. Mary stated, "Seeing the community pull together has lightened the load. To see them [the three granddaughters] standing there in their Halloween costumes crying as they watched their home burn to the ground was heartbreaking, to say the least. There are not enough ways to say thank you to everyone for their kindness and support."

Nikki added that monetary donations are the most helpful so the family can use the funds for what they know they need. She shared, "Any monetary donations can be mailed to school. The monetary donations we receive will be used to help with rent/securing a place to live, grocery cards, and store gift cards for the clothing." Donations can be sent to the school at School District of Phillips, c/o Staroba Fire Fund, 365 Hwy. 100, Phillips, WI 54555. Mark the donation for the "Staroba Fire Fund" but write the check out to the "PES Activity Account."

There will also be a benefit on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at Ape Hangers Saloon in Catawba starting at 1 p.m. There will be gift baskets and meat raffled off to raise funds for the family.
Submitted photo taken of David and Kaylee shortly before the tragic accident.

On Saturday, February 11, 2023, David Kohlmeier and his daughter, Kaylee Lorraine Hamann Kohlmeier, set out to have a fun day of snowmobiling. They stopped by their friends, the Klismets, visited for a bit, and then set back out on the trails. Not long after, a day of fun turned into a day of tragedy when their snowmobile hit a tree.

David was taken to the hospital via ambulance. Kaylee was med-flighted to the emergency room in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, the next day, the worst came true. Although Kaylee was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, the injuries she sustained meant that she would not survive. Kaylee passed on with her parents and extended family present to say good-bye. All this was happening to Kaylee while her dad, David, was in-between surgeries for his injuries.

David, having completed his second surgery and still in the hospital, has a lot of physical healing to do but an even greater amount of emotional healing, his sister, Kimberly Borman, shared. He will need to undergo more surgeries and will be off work for an extended period of time. The very next step in the healing process is Kaylee's funeral.

Her funeral will be at Peace Lutheran Church in Park Falls on Saturday, February 18, 2023. Friends and family may gather for a visitation from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., which will be the hour of service. Rev. Samuel Morsching will be the officiant. Attendees are asked to wear pink, purple, or something sparkly in honor and memory of Kaylee, as pink and purple were her favorite colors. For those who would like to help with David's expenses and Kaylee's funeral expenses, a Go Fund Me donation page has been established. Click here to donate to the official page for this tragic accident.

A future celebration of life and interment will take place on July 4, 2023, Kaylee's birthday.

How appropriate that Kaylee was born on the 4th of July. Her family states, "She lit up every room with her infectious smile and giggles, and she spread joy to all of those around her." She is described as having been "a compassionate child who had a great sense of humor with a sprinkle of sass."

Kaylee fully enjoyed life. She loved playing with her dogs, Izzy and Abby. She also loved to spend time in nature, enjoying riding her bike, grouse hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and UTV riding.

Even though she enjoyed the outdoors, Kaylee was a girly girl who loved her baby dolls and stuffies.

A second grader at Chequamegon Elementary School, Kaylee enjoyed spending time with her classmates and her teachers. Her favorite subjects were art and reading. She especially liked to read to her grandmother, Sharon Kohlmeier.

A helper by nature, Kaylee was always willing to chip in with chores or help out in the garden and kitchen. She loved to be surrounded by her family.

Kaylee is survived by her father, David Kohlmeier; mother, Jamie Boomgard; siblings, Jensen Edward Poncek, Adeline Rose Miesbauer, Mackenzie Renee Miesbauer, and Kathryn Louise Miesbauer; paternal grandmother, Sharon Kohlmeier; maternal grandparents, Mary and Billy Joyce; along with aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Marvin Hamann; paternal great grandparents, Wally and Edna Hamann; uncle, Michael Hamann; and great-uncle, Bruce Hulke.
Catkins Animal Rescue, Inc., with assistance from Price County Humane Officer Mindy Dabler, rescued cats and kittens from a large local colony.

The cats and kittens have a host of health issues that need to be treated. Some have upper respiratory illnesses, eye infections, ear mites, ear infections, and other medical conditions. Several of the adult cats are pregnant and ready to deliver litters of kittens very soon.

Of course, along with being sick, the cats and kittens are scared and stressed, but they are all friendly. Once they are back to good health, they will be ready for adoption and will get a chance at wonderful lives, but their medical concerns need to be taken care of first so applications are not being accepted for these cats and kittens just yet.

Speaking of those medical needs, Catkins advised, "The costs to get them back to a healthy state and spay and neuter them will be significant. If you’re able to help support the care of these deserving cats, please consider doing so by clicking the Donate link at the top of the Catkins website. This could not be done without your support, and we are forever grateful for our community far and wide!"

Catkins is the only Price County rescue service. They receive many calls per week for animal surrenders, strays, and colonies. They are limited on space, resources, and staff but will work with the animals day and night to make sure they receive the care they deserve. "They don’t have a voice, so we become that for them!" Catkins shared.

DOUBLE WHAMMY: PHILLIPS WOMAN LOSES TWO HOMES WITHIN TWO MONTHS

In late September, Category 4 Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida. Its destruction left one Phillips resident, Sandy Krueger, without her summer home that she purchased in July 2022. It was located in Port Charlotte, northwest of Fort Myers. It was eight miles from the house of her eldest son, DJ, who is a graduate of Prentice High School. DJ's house survived the hurricane.

Sandy was raised in Wisconsin, but moved to Florida as a young woman to work for a cruise line. Thirteen years later, her home at the time, located in Davie, Florida, survived Hurricane Katrina but was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma. She moved back to Wisconsin a number of years ago and wanted to stay long enough that her youngest son, Andrew, could complete high school in Phillips. He will graduate in 2025. Upon his graduation, her plan was to make her summer home in Florida her permanent residence. With the loss of her Florida home, however, Sandy was undecided if she would rebuild or not.

Seeing the devastation in Florida when she visited her property, Sandy decided to reach out to the schools to see if they could help collect dry goods and personal hygiene items that she could deliver on her next trip to Florida. Schools in Phillips, Prentice, and Medford, along with a line dancing class in Stetsonville, filled up her truck with donations of all kinds. She delivered the items to Floridians who could not get to food distribution centers due to having their cars underwater with no way to travel.

Two months later, more destruction hit, this time in the form of a fire that destroyed their permanent residence on Raskie Road in Phillips. Fortunately, no one was home the night of the fire. Sandy explained they were not home that night, because "we had a problem with the water heater and I’d been meaning to call the electrician all week for problems with lights in the kitchen." Her son did not want to stay at the home with the lighting and hot water heater issues, so they went to a nearby motel. That night they got a call that their house was on fire.

Sandy added, "My life’s theme song is from a show called 'Hee Haw.' The song goes, 'If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.'"

The luck they did have, though, is that no one was injured in the blaze. However, the home is a total loss. Sandy shared, "The worst part is my husband passed away last year, and all my memories of him were in the house."

Not only did they lose their personal belongings, but Sandy lost the inventory for her Lego business. She has been selling new and used Legos by piece or as whole sets plus selling the empty boxes and instruction manuals since 2018. She said she loves her job but wasn't aware of her insurance needs. "I didn’t know I needed separate insurance for my Legos, so none of that is covered."

When My Price County / My Northern Wisconsin reached out to Sandy, she wasn't sure if she should ask to raise funds. "It’s hard being the one who needs help. I’m always the one who is there to help others," she admitted. However, her son stated it might be nice to get help replacing the Christmas presents they lost. Sandy said monetary donations would also help them with temporary lodging and re-starting her Lego business. To donate, you can contact Sandy at 715-657-0867, send checks to Sandra Krueger, W6908 Raskie Road, Phillips, WI 54555, or donate on GoFundMe at https://www.gofundme.com/f/63fhv3-house-fire.

According to the Price County Sheriff's Office, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Steve Keller's passions in life include fishing, making cribbage boards, making candy, and spending time with family and friends. These are also the things that keep him going as he battles cancer.

For the past two years, Steve has had esophageal cancer. He is in Stage 4. With the progression of the cancer, he now receives treatments every week. He also receives surgeries as needed.

Medical expenses, traveling, and future expenses have and will continue to impact the family greatly.

A benefit and living celebration of life will take place on Saturday, September 24, 2022 starting at 2 p.m. There will be beer, soda, water, a baked goods auction, 50/50, raffle baskets, and live music at Badger's Den Sports Bar in Phillips.

"Not only are we doing a benefit, but Steve would like to be surrounded by family and friends in his ending stages of life so we will be doing a living celebration of life," Jody Kozak shared. "We are accepting donations, raffle baskets, and gifts to be used as raffle items," she added. To donate, you can contact 715-820-2593 or participate in the benefit.

It's not really Christmas in July, but now is a great time to help The Santa's Elves Foundation, which is requesting donations to assist families during Christmas.

According to Debra Alexander, president of the foundation, "Our mission is to bring joy to the children of Price County at Christmastime. We provide gifts for the children of families that are going through financial hardships."

In 2021, 71 families with 194 children were given a brighter Christmas thanks to donations from the community.

According to Deb, the total number of families and children helped fluctuates every year. The foundation has helped as many as 300 children during past Christmases.

Finding room to store all the much-appreciated donations is another challenge, however. For that reason, the Santa's Elves Foundation started a building fund many years ago so they can have a permanent home. Deb shared, "We have been utilizing space in churches and area businesses throughout the past years. This is a difficult process as we have to be able to use the facility for six to eight weeks in order to setup, review, process, and distribute the gifts to the qualified families." The group has been researching purchasing an office trailer, mobile home, or some other permanent option. "We have had property donated to us, so we need a building where we can get heat, water, and electric. If someone has one they want to donate or sell at a very reasonable price range, that would be great. We would still have the expense of site prep, utilities, transportation, and labor," Deb added.

Santa's Elves Foundation is a 501-3c organization. You can mail your monetary donations to Santa's Elves Foundation, P.O. Box 127, Fifield, WI 54524 or donate via GoFundMe at https://www.gofundme.com/f/christmas-che...c604758b74
