At the end of the academic year 2024-2025, Northland College will close in Ashland.

The college has been in financial jeopardy since March 2024. According to the college, "More than one thousand donors responded to a spring 2024 fundraising appeal and the college reduced costs by streamlining its academic offerings and cutting staff." Northland College began the 2024-2025 academic year with nine majors and a smaller number of students.

However, the college was not able to sustain itself. Therefore, the Northland College Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 for the closure.

According to Ted Bristol, Chair of the Northland College Board of Trustees, “Despite the collaborative efforts of the entire Northland family, we no longer have the resources needed to navigate the economic and demographic storms endangering small, liberal arts institutions today....With declining enrollment and soaring costs, it takes more to operate the College than we raise in tuition. Even after enacting aggressive measures to cut costs and raise revenues, Northland College has no sustainable path forward.”

Interim President Barb Lundberg assured the students that this year's coursework will continue and commencement will take place as scheduled. Students who are not graduating will be advised on options, such as teach-out agreements with cooperating institutions and transfer to other colleges.

ASHLAND COUNTY: DNR ISSUES INCIDENTAL TAKE NOTICE FOR RARE TURTLE

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) proposes to issue a permit for the "incidental taking" of a rare turtle in Ashland County, which may result from the Bad River Meander Stabilization Project.

Incidental take refers to the unintentional loss of individual endangered or threatened animals or plants that does not put the species' overall population at risk.

Enbridge Energy, Limited Partnership (Enbridge) plans to protect approximately 390 feet (approximately 0.24 acres) of the Bad River shoreline in Ashland County, Wisconsin. The shoreline to be protected is an area where erosion naturally occurs and is where the riverbank is closest to Line 5.

The primary transportation equipment will consist of a helicopter to transport and install trees at the site, and boat/pontoon and trucks/UTVs to transport personnel and tools. To minimize potential impacts associated with access, Enbridge will use pre-existing roads, the Line 5 corridor and an existing trail that are routinely traveled. Prior to installation of the tree revetment, Enbridge will use a small excavator operating within the Bad River to remove debris located along the shoreline. To isolate the excavator within the Bad River, Enbridge will install a temporary dam using an aqua-dam.

The presence of the state threatened wood turtle is confirmed in the vicinity of the project site. DNR staff determined that the proposed project may result in the incidental taking of some turtles.

The DNR concludes that the proposed project is not likely to appreciably reduce the likelihood of the survival or recovery of the species within the state, the whole plant-animal community of which it is a part of or the habitat that is critical to its existence.

Conservation measures to minimize the adverse effect on the endangered species will be incorporated into the proposed Incidental Take Permit. Copies of the jeopardy assessment and background information on the wood turtle are available upon request from DNR Conservation Biologist Stacy Rowe.

The public is encouraged to submit written comments regarding project-related impacts to the wood turtle by Dec. 15, 2023 to:
According to witness accounts, the boat had last been seen in the water on the afternoon of August 7th with a single occupant.

Responders searched the shoreline and off-shore area through August 11th, concentrating efforts on areas of interest near Second Landing. That evening, around 8:00 p.m., the owner of the boat, John Stanslaski, 60, of Ashland, Wisconsin, was found deceased on the shore approximately 1/2 mile from where his boat was recovered.

The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest condolences to Stanslaski’s family for their tragic loss.

Search efforts were conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the United States Coast Guard, the National Parks Service, the Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission, Xcel Energy, Enbridge, Ashland County Emergency Management, Wisconsin Emergency Management, the Wisconsin Air National Guard, Crossman Consulting, Sawyer County Search & Rescue, the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, the Ashland Police Department, and the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office.

This incident remains under investigation by the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office and the Ashland County coroner, though no foul play is suspected at this time.
Dan and Barb Koch raised their family on Bear Lake Road in Butternut. Dan is a pulp truck driver. Barb works part-time at a gas station and is a full-time student. The couple has six children, including Terri, Danielle, Josh, Kevin, Kimberly, and Tyler. Three of their children reside at home.

On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, while Terri and a friend were home, a fire broke out. There is not yet a confirmation for the start of the fire at this time, but the home and its contents are a complete loss. The family also lost their two family cats. No person was harmed in the fire.

Donations are appreciated. Clothing sizes needed include boys' large shirts, ladies' size medium shirts, ladies' size 7-8 jeans, ladies' size 8 shoes, men's size large shirts, and men's size 12 shoes. This list will be updated if more sizes get reported by the family.

Food and clothing donations can be dropped off with Cindy Yeske Pritzl at 301 West Michigan Street in Butternut.

If you are from out of the area, you can private message Cindy Koch on Facebook to make other arrangements. Cindy, the brother of Dan, added, "God bless all your prayers, support, and love!"
