On Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at 2:16 p.m., Sawyer County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on State Highway 27/70 in the Town of Radisson regarding a deceased female.<br />
<br />
Deputies discovered a 61-year-old, Radisson woman, Lynette D. Coaty, in the residence.  She had died from apparent stab wounds.<br />
<br />
According to Sheriff Douglas Mrotek, "During the initial investigation into the incident, deputies were able to identify an individual as a possible suspect in the homicide.  At approximately 4 p.m., the suspect’s vehicle was observed traveling westbound on State Highway 27/70 and ultimately stopped by deputies near the Village of Radisson.  The driver, identified as Yevhen Kravchenko, age 37, also from Radisson, was arrested in connection with the homicide."<br />
<br />
The suspect is currently being held in the Sawyer County Jail for First Degree Intentional Homicide and is awaiting a court appearance.<br />
<br />
The death remains under investigation by the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory and the Medical Examiner’s Office.]]></description>

On Friday, October 10, 2025, at 8:33 a.m., an arrest was made in connection with the business and residential fires that occurred in the Sawyer County area over the past year.<br />
<br />
The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice – Division of Criminal Investigations and the Birchwood Police Department, arrested a 30-year old man, Thomas L. Olson, from Birchwood, Wisconsin.<br />
<br />
According to Sheriff Doug Mrotek, "Olson’s arrest follows a nearly year-long joint investigation into a series of structure fires that began in November of 2024.  As a result of the investigation, authorities arrested Olson on multiple felony counts of Arson of Buildings (Wis. Stat §943.02(1)(a)).  He is currently being held in the Sawyer County Jail awaiting a bail hearing."<br />

The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation State Fire Marshal’s Office, is actively investigating six suspected arson cases.  The fires occurred in the Radisson, Exeland, and Birchwood areas of Sawyer County starting on November 18, 2024.<br />
<br />
The Sawyer County Sheriff's Office stated, "In an effort to expedite this investigation and ensure the safety of our community, we are releasing surveillance footage of an individual seen near the area where one of these fires occurred.  The video is being disseminated to the public with the hope that someone will recognize the individual or have information that could assist in this investigation."  The video can be viewed at <span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="mycode_u"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/100066926904591/videos/pcb.882294264011462/1933978237096008" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">this link</a></span>.<br />

Three 911 calls, reporting fires, were received by the Sawyer County Communication Center between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Monday, November 18, 2024. <br />

The fires were all located in the southern part of the county.  Sawyer County deputies, assisted by the Radisson, Exeland, and Birchwood fire departments, responded to the locations.<br />

First, at 4:02 a.m., a structure fire was reported on Weirgor Road in the Town of Radisson.  According to police, "The residence was currently under new construction and was unoccupied at the time of the fire.  The structure was deemed a total loss."<br />
<br />
Next, at 4:10 a.m., a second fire was reported at a residence on Gueldners Lane in the Town of Meteor.  According to police, "This residence was also unoccupied and a total loss."<br />

A third fire, reported at 6:02 a.m., was at the Birchwood American Legion Post on County Highway F in the Town of Edgewater.  The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.<br />

The Sawyer County Sheriff's Office is investigating several alleged credit card theft complaints reported on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.<br />
<br />
Reports of credit card fraud occurred at Price Rite for &#36;1,600, Market Place for &#36;1,800, and Hayward Bait and Tackle for &#36;1,800.<br />
<br />
According to police, it is believed the suspects also used the card in Ironwood, Michigan and Ashland, Wisconsin. <br />
<br />
The woman's name is Destiny Johnson.  The man's last name is Johnson.<br />
<br />
The credit card does not hava a chip, so the cashiers have to manually enter the credit card number.<br />
<br />
The Sawyer County Sheriff's Office is attempting to locate these individuals for possible felony charges.  If anyone has information, Sawyer County Deputy Ryan Krummel should be contact at 715-634-4858.]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[SAWYER COUNTY:  CAR AND MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT IN TOWNSHIP OF WINTER]]></title>

At 2:11 p.m. on April 21, 2024, the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by Sawyer County EMS, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Winter and Radisson Fire Departments, responded to a 911 call.  The call was for a car and motorcycle crash which occurred on State Highway 70 approximately one mile east of Koeppler Road in the Township of Winter.<br />
<br />
According to witnesses, a 2004 Cadillac sedan, driven by Erin Jones, 39, of Ojibwa, WI, was pulled over on the north shoulder of the westbound lane attempting to turn around.  During her attempt, Erin turned into the path of a westbound 2001 Kawasaki motorcycle, which was operated by Daniel Barber, 57, of Hayward, WI.  The motorcycle struck the front driver’s side of the car, which caused severe damage to both vehicles.<br />
<br />
According to the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department, "The operator of the motorcycle suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to a hospital in Duluth, MN.  The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.<br />

At 2:11 p.m. on April 21, 2024, the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by Sawyer County EMS, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Winter and Radisson Fire Departments, responded to a 911 call.  The call was for a car and motorcycle crash which occurred on State Highway 70 approximately one mile east of Koeppler Road in the Township of Winter.<br />
<br />
According to witnesses, a 2004 Cadillac sedan, driven by Erin Jones, 39, of Ojibwa, WI, was pulled over on the north shoulder of the westbound lane attempting to turn around.  During her attempt, Erin turned into the path of a westbound 2001 Kawasaki motorcycle, which was operated by Daniel Barber, 57, of Hayward, WI.  The motorcycle struck the front driver’s side of the car, which caused severe damage to both vehicles.<br />
<br />
According to the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department, "The operator of the motorcycle suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to a hospital in Duluth, MN.  The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.<br />

On September 21, 2023, administration at the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office learned of allegations of possible domestic abuse by a Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputy.<br />
<br />
The investigation was handed over to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.  During the investigation, investigators had probable cause to believe that a 28-year old deputy from Hayward committed a number of crimes.  Those crimes include domestic battery, false imprisonment, strangulation & suffocation, and stalking. <br />
<br />
The deputy was arrested.  He is currently in jail.  A court date has not yet been set for his initial appearance.<br />
<br />
The case remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.<br />
<br />
The public is advised that a charge is only an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[According to the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office, "On August 19, 2023 at 6:53 a.m., Sawyer County deputies, assisted by the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin DNR, Sawyer County EMS, and the Stone Lake and LCO Fire Departments, were dispatched to Snowmobile Trail Number 31 north of Sissabagama Road in the Town of Sand Lake for a report of a person being struck by a vehicle.<br />
<br />
Upon arrival, an 18-year-old female victim was located and transported by ambulance for medical attention.  The victim ultimately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased while in transport to a medical facility."<br />
<br />
Upon further investigation and information received, it was determined that an underage drinking party had taken place.  The 16-year-old juvenile suspect, driving a 2011 Ford F-350, struck the 18-yeard old woman and ran her over.  The suspect fled the area but was later taken into custody by the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office.<br />
<br />
The names of those involved are being withheld pending notification of family and further investigation into the incident.  Continued investigation is being conduced by the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Sawyer County Medical Examiner’s Office.<br />

A 1999 Chevrolet Tracker operated by Harley J. Karow, 27, of Cable, WI was traveling north on US Hwy 63 when it crossed the centerline.  Harley's vehicle struck, head on, a southbound semi trailer truck driven by Thomas A. Franchek, 55, of Ashland, WI.<br />
<br />
Harley sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  A passenger in the Karow vehicle, Andrew J. Ferguson, 31, of Hayward, WI sustained life-threatening injuries and was air lifted to a Minnesota hospital to treat his injuries.  The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.  The driver of the semi trailer truck did not have any reported injuries.<br />

While on their way to the crime scene, deputies learned that the victim left the bar and went to a residence next door.  The victim was transported by ambulance to the Ladysmith Hospital.  Needing more medical treatment, the person was later flown to another facility.  The extent of the injuries is currently unknown.  <br />

The victim was able to tell the police the identity of the suspect, Mason C. Forest, 31, of Radisson.<br />

Negotiations with the suspect were unsuccessful, so SWAT teams deployed chemical munitions into the establishment.  A short time later, with the assistance of a tactical robot, the SWAT team was able to call the suspect out.  He was taken into custody without further incident and arrested for First Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Resisting Obstructing an Officer, and Disorderly Conduct. He is being held in the Sawyer County Jail and is awaiting a court appearance.<br />

Boettcher, 72, of Hayward.  A 2008 Ford F-150 operated by Jared T. 			<title><![CDATA[SAWYER COUNTY:  VEHICLE FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES DUE TO ACCIDENT]]></title>

			<description><![CDATA[On September 23, 2022 at 10:34 p.m., the Sawyer County Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a person and a vehicle on fire on River Road in the Town of Hunter.<br />
<br />
Sawyer County deputies, assisted by Sawyer County EMS and the Round Lake Fire Department, responded to the scene.  Upon arrival, deputies observed a vehicle in the roadway totally engulfed in flames.  Lying in the roadway, next to the vehicle, was the motionless body of a subject that was also on fire.  Due to the extreme heat, emergency responders were not able to safely approach the victim.  The fire was extinguished and the victim was found to be deceased.  The victim has been positively identified as 75-year old William J. Smith of Antioch, Illinois.<br />
<br />
Further investigation indicated that the driver of the 2018 Cadillac sedan was traveling north on River Road when it appeared to enter the ditch, strike a mailbox, and come back on to the roadway.  The vehicle continued a short distance down the road where it was found fully engulfed in flames.<br />
<br />
The incident is currently under investigation by the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, the Sawyer County Coroner’s Office, and the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations Fire Marshalls Office.<br />

F.  Eyewitnesses said the man tried to pass several vehicles at once, and, while doing so, his vehicle hit the gravel on the shoulder of the northbound lane.  He likely over-corrected and entered the ditch on the southbound lane.  His vehicle struck a tree.  While livesaving efforts were performed by deputies, the man succumbed to his injuries at the crash scene.<br />

			<description><![CDATA[On Friday, April 2, 2021 at 12:26 a.m., deputies from the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Hungry Lake Lane in the Town of Sand Lake for a call of a deceased female.  Upon arrival, deputies discovered the body of Cary Lynne Elkin, 42, of Stone Lake, Wisconsin, deceased in the residence from multiple gunshot wounds. <br />

Evidence obtained during search warrants, interviews, and forensic analysis identified Manly M. McDermott, 29, of Bemidji, MN as the suspect in the shooting death of Ms. Elkin. The case will be forwarded to the Sawyer County District Attorney’s Office requesting McDermott be charged with 1st Degree Intentional Homicide.<br />
<br />
McDermott is currently incarcerated at the Moose Lake Correctional Facility in Moose Lake Minnesota, serving a 5-year prison sentence for an unrelated firearms conviction. <br />
