A 911 call was received by the Taylor County Sheriff's Office on Friday, December 5, 2025, at approximately 4:17 p.m. The caller reported a missing person near the 7600 block of Perkinstown Avenue in the Township of Hammel. She said that her husband had been ice fishing earlier in the afternoon on Washington Flowage, which is located near their property. When he did not return, she was concerned he may have fallen through the ice.

Taylor County deputies, along with Medford fire personnel, Taylor County Emergency Management, and Taylor County EMS personnel, arrived at Washington Flowage where they saw a single sled trail leading out to an open area on the ice. The sled was seen in the open area of water.

Given they have specialized equipment and expertise in open water searches, Marathon County Sheriff's Office Dive Team, Wings of Hope and Bruce’s Legacy were contacted to aid in the search effort.

The man was found in the water, deceased, and was recovered. He was identified as Randall K. Runge of Medford. He was 69 years old. There is no indication of foul play.

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office extended their condolences to the family of Randall. "We would also like to extend our gratitude towards the non-profit organizations, Wings of Hope and Bruce’s Legacy, along with the other emergency personnel that assisted," the sheriff's office added.

According to Aspirus Health, labor and delivery services will no longer be offered at Aspirus Medford starting October 1, 2024. These services will be moved to Aspirus Wausau Hospital Birthing Center in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Aspirus Medford has been operating with a part-time OB/GYN since November 2020, so it has been challenging to have coverage every hour of every day for on-call services, according to Dale Hustedt, president of the Northwest WI Division of Aspirus Health. "We are not alone in this decision as, across the country, rural providers have made similar changes with less than 40% of rural hospitals performing routine deliveries. In Wisconsin, we have seen deliveries ceased at more than a dozen hospitals.”

A press release from Aspirus stated, "One of the factors that led to this decision is the fact that physician supply for Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) continues to be a challenge. Despite aggressive recruiting by Aspirus Health for years, the OB/GYN pipeline continues to shrink, particularly those interested in rural practice."

The press release continued, "According to the American Medical Association, the United States is projected to experience a shortage of 5,000 OB/GYNs by 2030. This is expected to cause already overworked doctors to further struggle to meet demand and continue widening maternal and infant health disparities. An aging workforce, aging population, and high rates of burnout are also contributing to the shortage."

“Aspirus is committed to the Medford area and surrounding community, and we believe this transition will help us provide the right mix of services to meet changing local needs,” said Dale. “Our region’s needs are dynamic, and we will continue to transform so we can advance our mission to heal people, promote health, and strengthen communities for generations to come.”

Aspirus Medford will continue to offer prenatal and postnatal care. Plus, Dale shared, "We will ensure that our emergency departments and facilities are prepared to address labor and delivery issues that may occur following the transition of services."

My Northern Wisconsin reached out to the media contact at Aspirus Medford asking why the decision was made and how people are going to be able to get these services in our rural area when so many facilities are not offering labor and delivery services. However, we did not receive direct answers and only received a copy of the press release regarding this matter.

At 1:43 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2024, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a man trapped underneath a manure spreader on State Highway 73 in the Town of Jump River.

Taylor County sheriff’s deputies, fire, ambulance, and other emergency services responded to the scene. Upon their arrival, the man, Myron Brooks, 71, of Gilman, WI, was extracted from beneath the manure spreader. Myron was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office has determined that Myron had been pulling a manure spreader behind his tractor in a field. He was southbound and en route to help his neighbor. When Myron was overdue to arrive by the neighbor, the neighbor went looking for him and found him unresponsive and trapped underneath the manure spreader. The tracks in the field indicate Myron had turned around, for an unknown reason, and headed back north. He then struck a power pole, which likely caused him to fall from the tractor and get trapped under the manure spreader.

According to the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, "The cause of the accident is undetermined, but it is believed Brooks may have suffered a medical emergency causing him to lose control of the tractor, which resulted in striking the utility pole and then falling from the tractor and under the manure spreader."

At 1:19 p.m. on January 24, 2024, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a one vehicle accident at the intersection of Winter Sports Road and Spruce Lake Road in the Town of Grover. The caller stated the vehicle was off the road. There was a large amount of blood in the vehicle. Taylor County deputies, along with EMS and Fire, were dispatched.

Upon arrival, it was determined that Zachary Dunn, 41, Medford, was deceased. However, his death was not caused by the accident. Rather, his death was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, the investigation determined that "Dunn was operating the vehicle and was traveling southbound on Winter Sports Road. While southbound on Winter Sports Road, Dunn’s vehicle began to swerve back and forth, crossing the center of the roadway several times. The vehicle then entered the east ditch striking trees and causing extensive damage to the vehicle. The air bag was deployed. After the vehicle came to rest in the ditch, Dunn retrieved a firearm that was in his vehicle and committed suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound."
Donna and Leroy Misener are parents, grandparents, aunt and uncle, family, and friends to many people in the Rib Lake area and beyond, including Taylor and Price Counties.

After celebrating Christmas in Price County with their family, they settled in for the night at their home on North Harper Lake in Taylor County. Hours later, around 3 a.m., Donna heard some popping noises and discovered a fire had started in the corner of their living room. She hollered for her husband who tried to put out the blaze, but the new fire extinguisher did not have enough in it to extinguish the blaze. As the house became filled with smoke, the couple had a difficult time escaping, but ultimately, they escaped the blaze together. Once outside, Leroy used his hands to pat down any smoke and flames that were on each of them.

They hollered for help, but no one could hear them, so they settled into their little shed. Donna's injuries were extensive, so after about three hours, Leroy ran about 3/4 of a mile to find a home with lights on. Those people let him in and called emergency services.

Fortunately, their lives were saved, though Donna is getting treatment for burns and other injuries at a hospital and will need extensive care.

Unfortunately, their entire home and its fifty years of memories have been destroyed.

My Northern Wisconsin reached out to a daughter of the couple to see if any help was needed from the community, but the couple did not want to ask for a dime. Unbeknownst to them at the time, to give them hope for a brighter new year, their niece, Robin Quednow, created a Go Fund Me page at this link. She stated she has never set up a fundraiser before, but added she is doing the only thing she knows to try to help them during this difficult time. Since the story has reached the public, the couple agreed that My Northern Wisconsin can publish these additional details.

A fund has also been established at Forward Bank where 100% of the proceeds will go to the family. To donate, go to any Forward Bank location or send the payment by mail. Checks should be written to the Misener Donation Fund. The envelope should be sent to Misener Donation Fund c/o Forward Bank, P.O.
At 3:27 p.m. on December 5, 2023, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a man had been run over by a loader at the Crass Sawmill located on State Hwy. 64 in the Town of Browning. It was further reported that the man was not conscious or breathing. Taylor County deputies, along with ambulance and EMS services, responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, deputies found the victim lying on the ground, deceased with severe head trauma. The victim was identified as 43-year-old Mark A. Frischman of Medford, Wisconsin.

According to the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, "The investigation into the incident finds that the victim, Mark Frischman, was talking with another individual in the driveway in near proximity to a large loader that was unloading a semi-truck. The conversation ended and one individual walked away and was about six feet away from Frischman when he turned back and had seen Mark Frischman had been backed over by the loader.

"The loader operator was backing a large loader that is not equipped with a back-up camera or back-up alarms. He was unaware that Mark Frischman was standing in the path of the loader as he was backing. Also contributing to the incident were semi-trucks and other large equipment running, making it difficult for the victim to have heard the loader approaching him."
At 2:54 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a one-vehicle accident at Oriole Drive, north of CTH-O, in the Town of Medford. It was reported there were multiple injuries.

Emergency services, including fire, ambulance, and law enforcement, arrived on the scene.

The Taylor County deputies were the first services on the scene. All occupants of the vehicle had been ejected during the crash, including two males and one female. The female was pronounced deceased at the scene due to injuries she sustained in the accident. The two male occupants were transported by ambulance and then flown by helicopter for treatment of their injuries.

A preliminary investigation indicates that one of the injured males was the driver of the vehicle. According to the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, "The vehicle was travelling southbound on Oriole Drive at speeds in excess of 100 MPH when the driver lost control of the vehicle while crossing a bridge. After losing control, the vehicle left the west side of the roadway at a high rate of speed overturning multiple times during which the occupants were ejected. The vehicle continued, overturning until eventually coming to rest approximately 191 yards (573 feet) off the roadway."
On Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 12:50 p.m., the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting an ATV accident on Lake Shore Drive in the Village Of Rib Lake.

The 911 caller was in a group of individuals driving UTVs and found the injured person lying on the road. The person was injured and unresponsive. Taylor County deputies, the fire department, and EMS were dispatched.

Upon emergency services arrival at the scene, the unresponsive ATV rider was identified as James C. Wacholtz Jr., 48, of Rib Lake. He has severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Wausau where he was pronounced deceased.

A preliminary investigation into the cause of the ATV accident indicates the driver likely lost control of the ATV while attempting to negotiate a right turn. This caused the ATV to overturn, and he was ejected off the ATV as it overturned. Speed is being considered as a factor in the cause of the accident, but the DNR is continuing its investigation.
