ONEIDA COUNTY: SECOND SNOWMOBILE CRASH IN THREE DAYS TAKES ANOTHER LIFE

On Friday, January 27, 2023, at approximately 11:10 p.m, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding a snowmobile accident.  The accident was on Trail 51, which is south of Intersection 300 near the intersection of CTH L and Heafford Road, located in the Town of Nokomis.

Deputies were able to determine that a snowmobile overtook another snowmobile at a high rate of speed.  The passing snowmobile was unable to negotiate a curve in the trail, causing the snowmobile operator to be ejected from his seat.  He then struck a fence post.

Witnesses attempted life saving measures; however, the 41-year old man, Matthew R. Finstrom, from Plainfield, Illinois, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is completing an accident report.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Nokomis Fire, first responders, Oneida County EMS, Tomahawk EMS, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the DNR, and the Oneida County Medical Examiner’s Department.
