A mining company, Green Light Metals, Inc., which is based in Toronto, Canada, has received an exploration license to conduct exploratory drilling for copper and gold in Taylor and Marathon Counties.
Doing business as Green Light Wisconsin, the company received its license on February 17, 2022. The license will expire on June 30, 2022 but can be renewed.
Green Light Metals states that the Reef and Bend mineral deposits in Taylor and Marathon Counties contain copper and gold reserves that are of "economic interest." The company purchased the mineral rights for the deposits from Aquila Resources in 2021.
The Bend deposit is located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest north of Medford in Taylor County. It is near the north branch of the Yellow River. The area contains 4 million tons of mostly copper and gold, discovered in 1986 and first drilled in the 1990s. The company wants to drill seven holes on site to search for the minerals.
The Reef deposit is located in Marathon County near the Eau Claire River, east of Wausau, and contains 454,000 tons of gold reserves. These minerals were discovered in the 1970s.
The company would need more permits before it begins drilling, such as filing a notice of intent with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Dan Colton, CEO of Green Light Metals, stated, "Green Light is in the process of filing the paperwork required to obtain the necessary permits and authorization for work to begin so we can provide a significant economic boost to the region while protecting our environment and transitioning our country as it accelerates toward green, clean energy."
